Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about AKISAN Dallas membership and programs

  • Who is eligible to join AKISAN Dallas Metro Chapter?
Membership is open to all Akwa Ibom State indigenes living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, their spouses, and naturalized citizens of Nigeria from Akwa Ibom families. Additionally, honorable membership is available to anyone regardless of race, religion, or nationalityďż˝ who wishes to contribute to the development of Akwa Ibom State or its people through the association (Article II).
  • What are the financial commitments required to become a member?
New members pay a one-time registration fee of $50 and monthly dues of $10. However, if you face financial hardship (e.g., job loss, medical expenses over $10,000, or natural disaster displacement), you can apply for a fee/dues waiver by emailing the president with your circumstances (Article III). All donations are voluntary and tax-deductible under IRS 501(c)(3).
  • What benefits do I get as a financial member in good standing?
Financial members who pay dues, attend at least 9 meetings in 12 months, and participate in programs enjoy full rights, including voting, running for office, and accessing emergency funds for serious illness or injury (Articles III & VIII). You'll also benefit from educational workshops, cultural events, and legal assistance on U.S. immigration matters (Article IV).
  • How does AKISAN Dallas Metro Chapter support its members and community?
The association fosters unity, promotes education, culture, and economic progress for Akwa Ibom people, and provides practical support like emergency funds, and youth programs. It also collaborates with U.S. charities to increase literacy in the community (Article IV).
  • What happens if I can't afford the registration fee or dues right now?
AKISAN is committed to ensuring that financial barriers does not prevent membership. You can request a waiver for the $50 registration fee and/or $10 monthly dues if you are experiencing significant hardship (e.g., unemployment, medical costs, or disability). Email the president your situation and a plan to resume payments within 6 months of recovery (Article III, Second Amendment).
  • How often are meetings held, and what if I can't attend regularly?
Meetings occur monthly on the 3rd Sunday at a time and place set by the Executive Council (Article III(g)). To stay in good standing with voting rights, you need to attend at least 9 meetings in a year. Non-financial members can still attend meetings and events but won't have voting rights or access to certain benefits (Article III).
  • Can I get involved in leadership roles, and how are leaders chosen?
Yes! Any financial member in good standing who attended 9 of the last 12 meetings can run for office. Elections happen every two years in November via secret ballot, with officers serving up to two 2-year terms. You must declare your candidacy 30 days before the election (Article XII).
  • What kind of support can I expect in an emergency?
AKISAN maintains an Emergency Fund (EF) of $5 per member, managed separately, to help with serious situations like illness, injuries, death, financial distress, or immigration challenges. Only members contributing to the EF can draw from it, and decisions are made by an elected committee (Article VIII).
